1. Understanding AliExpress’s Refund Process
Before we dive into fixing your specific problem, let’s understand how AliExpress refunds are supposed to work.
The Buyer Protection Program
AliExpress offers a Buyer Protection program designed to protect customers from fraud, undelivered items, and products that don’t match descriptions. Here’s the standard process:
Step 1: Open a Dispute
- You must open a dispute within the protection period (typically 15-60 days after shipment)
- Go to “My Orders” → Select the problem order → Click “Open Dispute”
Step 2: Provide Evidence
- Upload photos showing the issue (wrong item, damage, etc.)
- Add screenshots of product descriptions vs. what you received
- Include tracking information if item wasn’t delivered
Step 3: Seller Response Period
- The seller has 5-7 days to respond to your dispute
- They may offer a partial refund, full refund, or ask you to close the dispute
Step 4: AliExpress Mediation
- If you reject the seller’s offer or they don’t respond, AliExpress steps in
- An AliExpress mediator reviews all evidence
- They make a final decision (usually within 7-15 days)
Step 5: Refund Processing
- If approved, refund is issued to your original payment method
- Processing time: 3-20 business days (varies by payment provider)
Sounds straightforward, right? In theory, yes. In practice? Not always.
2. Why Your Refund Might Be Delayed (Common Reasons)
If you’re reading this, you’re probably past the “normal” refund timeline. Here’s why that might be happening:
Reason #1: Processing Time (The Boring Truth)
Reality: Refunds can take up to 20 business days (that’s 4 weeks!) to show up in your account.
Why so long?
- AliExpress processes the refund (2-7 days)
- Your bank/payment provider processes it (3-20 days)
- International transactions add more time
What to do: Check your bank statement carefully. It might be there under a different name (sometimes shows as “ALIPAY” or similar).
Reason #2: Dispute Still Under Review
The problem: The dispute might not actually be closed yet.
Check this:
- Go to “My Orders” on AliExpress
- Click on the disputed order
- Look at the status—is it “Refund approved” or still “Under review”?
If it says “Under review,” your dispute isn’t finalized. AliExpress or the seller might be waiting for more information from you.
Reason #3: Incorrect Payment Details
Common mistake: If you changed banks, got a new card, or your payment method expired, the refund might fail.
Solution:
- Contact AliExpress support to update payment details
- Provide current account information
- Request manual reprocessing of the refund
Reason #4: Payment Method Limitations
Different payment methods have different refund timelines:
| Payment Method | Typical Refund Time |
|---|---|
| Credit Card | 5-10 business days |
| Debit Card | 3-7 business days |
| PayPal | 3-5 business days |
| Bank Transfer | 10-20 business days |
| AliExpress Wallet | Instant (but only if you want store credit) |
Pro tip: PayPal refunds are usually fastest. Credit cards can take longer due to billing cycles.
3. Step-by-Step: How to Get Your Refund (When AliExpress Isn’t Cooperating)
Okay, you’ve waited. You’ve been patient. Still no refund. Here’s exactly what to do:
Step 1: Verify Refund Status (5 minutes)
Do this first:
- Log into AliExpress
- Go to “My Orders”
- Find the disputed order
- Click “View Details”
- Check “Refund Status”
Look for:
- “Refund completed” = AliExpress processed it (problem is with bank)
- “Refund processing” = Still being handled by AliExpress
- “Dispute rejected” = You need to appeal or escalate
If it says “Refund completed” but you haven’t received money: The issue is likely with your bank or payment provider. Skip to Step 3.
Step 2: Contact AliExpress Customer Support (15-30 minutes)
How to reach them:
Option A: Live Chat (Fastest)
- Open AliExpress app or website
- Go to “Account” → “Help Center”
- Click “Online Service” or “Customer Service”
- Choose “Live Chat”
Option B: Submit a Ticket
- Help Center → “Contact Us”
- Select your issue category
- Fill out the form with:
- Order number
- Dispute ID
- Detailed description of the problem
- Screenshots showing refund was approved
What to say:
Hello,
My dispute #[DISPUTE ID] for order #[ORDER NUMBER] was approved on [DATE], but I have not received the refund.
According to my account, the refund was processed [X] days ago, but my bank/PayPal has not received the funds.
Can you please:
1. Confirm the refund was sent
2. Provide the transaction reference number
3. Confirm which payment method was used
I need this resolved as soon as possible.
Thank you.
Expected response time: 24-48 hours for ticket, instant for live chat
Step 3: Contact Your Bank or Payment Provider (15 minutes)
Sometimes the holdup isn’t AliExpress—it’s your bank.
What to do:
- Call your bank’s customer service
- Say: “I’m expecting a refund from AliExpress, transaction date [DATE], amount [AMOUNT]”
- Ask them to check for:
- Pending credits
- Failed refund attempts
- Holds on the account
Bring this info:
- Refund amount
- Transaction date (from AliExpress)
- Reference number (if AliExpress provided one)
Common bank issues:
- Card was replaced or expired
- Account was closed
- Refund flagged as suspicious (happens with international transfers)
Step 4: Escalate Within AliExpress (If Support Doesn’t Help)
If customer support gives you the runaround, escalate.
How to escalate:
- Reply to their response with: “This issue is not resolved. I need this escalated to a supervisor.”
- Request to speak with the “Dispute Resolution Team” specifically
- Mention you’ll file a chargeback if not resolved (they take this seriously)
Be firm but polite:
I appreciate your help, but this issue remains unresolved. I've waited [X] days beyond the refund timeline.
I need this escalated to your dispute resolution team immediately. If this is not resolved within 48 hours, I will have no choice but to file a chargeback with my bank.
Please provide:
1. Escalation ticket number
2. Expected resolution timeline
3. Direct contact for the resolution team
Thank you.
Why this works: The threat of a chargeback costs them money (chargeback fees + potential penalties). They’ll prioritize your case.
Step 5: File a Chargeback (Last Resort)
If AliExpress completely fails to refund you after exhausting all options, it’s time for a chargeback.
What is a chargeback? It’s when you ask your bank or credit card company to reverse the charge and get your money back directly from AliExpress.
How to file a chargeback:
Step 1: Gather Evidence
- Order confirmation
- Dispute details and timeline
- Screenshots of all communication with AliExpress
- Photos of the product issue (if applicable)
- AliExpress’s refund approval (if they approved but didn’t pay)
Step 2: Contact Your Bank
- Call the number on the back of your card
- Say: “I need to file a chargeback dispute”
- Explain the situation clearly and concisely
- Submit all your evidence
Step 3: Wait for Investigation
- Bank reviews your case (10-45 days)
- They contact AliExpress
- Decision is made
Important notes:
- AliExpress might ban your account after a chargeback (they don’t like this)
- You’ll likely get your money back (banks usually side with cardholders)
- Chargebacks have time limits (usually 60-120 days from purchase)
Should you do a chargeback?
- Yes, if: AliExpress approved refund but didn’t pay, OR seller sent wrong item and won’t refund
- No, if: You’re still within normal processing times (give it 30 days total)
4. How to Avoid Refund Issues on AliExpress (Prevention Tips)
Honestly? The best way to handle refund issues is to avoid them entirely. Here’s how:
Tip #1: Choose Sellers Wisely
Look for:
- 95%+ positive feedback rating
- “Top Brand” or “Choice” badge
- Lots of reviews with photos
- High number of orders (1,000+ is good)
Red flags:
- 🚩 New seller (<6 months)
- 🚩 Less than 90% positive rating
- 🚩 No reviews with photos
- 🚩 Suspiciously low prices (even for AliExpress)
Reality check: Even “good” sellers can have issues, but your odds are way better.
Tip #2: Read Reviews (Actually Read Them)
Don’t just look at the star rating. Read the actual reviews, especially the ones with photos.
What to look for:
- Do photos match the product description?
- Do reviewers mention sizing issues, quality problems, or shipping delays?
- Are there recent reviews? (Product quality can change)
Pro tip: Filter reviews by your country to see shipping times and customs issues for your location.
Tip #3: Communicate with Sellers BEFORE Disputing
Here’s a secret: Sellers hate disputes (it hurts their rating). Many will resolve issues quickly if you message them first.
Instead of immediately opening a dispute:
- Message the seller: “I received the wrong item. Can you send the correct one or issue a refund?”
- Give them 48 hours to respond
- If they offer a reasonable solution, accept it
- If they ignore you or refuse, THEN open a dispute
Why this works: You’ll often get a faster resolution without the hassle of disputes.
Tip #4: Use Buyer Protection Wisely
Don’t wait until the last day to open a dispute. Act within:
- 5-10 days if item not received by estimated date
- 3-5 days if item is clearly wrong/damaged
- Immediately if seller asks you to close dispute before resolution (common scam)
Never:
- Close a dispute because seller promises to “send replacement” (they often don’t)
- Accept partial refunds for completely wrong items
- Leave positive feedback before you’re satisfied
Tip #5: Use Secure Payment Methods
Best options:
- PayPal (if available in your region) – Fastest refunds, extra buyer protection
- Credit card – Chargeback protection, fraud protection
- Debit card with buyer protection – Similar to credit cards
Avoid:
- Direct bank transfers (no protection)
- Western Union or similar (irreversible)
- Cryptocurrency (no recourse)
Tip #6: Document Everything
Take these simple steps for EVERY order:
- Screenshot the product listing (before you buy)
- Save order confirmation email
- Track your package (note any delays)
- Take photos/videos when package arrives (especially if you suspect issues)
Why? If you need to dispute, you’ll have all evidence ready. Makes the process 10x faster.
5. Better Alternatives to AliExpress (Consider These Instead)
Look, I get it. AliExpress has cheap prices. But if you’re tired of refund headaches, shipping delays, and quality issues, there are better options.
Alternative #1: Amazon (More Expensive, WAY Less Hassle)
Pros:
- Fast shipping (2-day with Prime)
- Easy returns and refunds (often instant)
- Reliable customer service
- Higher quality standards
Cons:
- Higher prices
- Less unique/niche products
Best for: When you need something quickly and reliably
My take: Yes, you’ll pay 20-50% more than AliExpress, but you’ll save hours of frustration. Worth it for important purchases.
Alternative #2: Etsy (For Handmade & Unique Items)
Pros:
- Unique, handmade products
- Support small businesses
- Good buyer protection
- Faster shipping than AliExpress (usually domestic)
Cons:
- More expensive than AliExpress
- Limited inventory for mass-produced items
Best for: Gifts, custom items, supporting independent sellers
Alternative #3: Temu or Shein (Similar to AliExpress)
Pros:
- Similar prices to AliExpress
- Faster shipping to some regions
- Good app experience
Cons:
- Similar quality concerns as AliExpress
- Newer companies (less established)
Best for: If you like the AliExpress model but want to try alternatives
Alternative #4: Local Retailers (The Safest Option)
Pros:
- Immediate refunds (in-store returns)
- See product before buying
- No shipping wait
- Support local economy
Cons:
- Higher prices
- Limited selection
Best for: When convenience and certainty matter more than price

6. When to File a Chargeback (Your Nuclear Option)
We covered this briefly, but let’s go deeper into when a chargeback makes sense.
When Chargebacks Are Justified:
File a chargeback if:
- AliExpress approved your refund but didn’t send money (after 30+ days)
- You received a completely different item and seller refuses refund
- Item never arrived and seller/AliExpress won’t refund
- You were charged twice for the same order
- Item was fraudulent or dangerous
Don’t file a chargeback if:
- You’re still within normal refund processing time (under 30 days)
- You changed your mind after receiving the item
- Item has minor quality issues (request partial refund instead)
- You’re disputing because of slow shipping (not refund-worthy)
The Chargeback Process Timeline
Week 1:
- You file dispute with your bank
- Bank issues temporary credit (sometimes)
- AliExpress is notified
Week 2-4:
- Bank investigates
- AliExpress responds with their side
- You may need to provide more evidence
Week 4-6:
- Bank makes decision
- If you win: Money is yours permanently
- If you lose: Temporary credit is reversed
Week 6+:
- AliExpress might appeal
- Extended investigation (rare)
Total timeline: 30-90 days typically
What Happens to Your AliExpress Account?
Reality: AliExpress will likely ban or restrict your account after a chargeback.
You might lose:
- Access to your account
- Pending orders
- Loyalty points
- Ability to create new account with same email/address
Is it worth it?
- For $10-20: Probably not
- For $100+: Absolutely
- For fraudulent transactions: Yes, always
My advice: If you plan to keep using AliExpress, exhaust ALL other options first. If you’re done with AliExpress anyway, chargeback without guilt.
7. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long does an AliExpress refund take?
A: Officially, 3-20 business days after approval. In reality:
- PayPal: 3-7 days
- Credit card: 5-15 days
- Debit card: 3-10 days
- Bank transfer: 10-20 days
If it’s been 30 days: Something is wrong. Contact support immediately.
Q: Can I get a refund if I already received the item?
A: Yes, if:
- Item doesn’t match description
- Item is damaged or defective
- Item is counterfeit
- Item poses safety risk
You’ll need to open a dispute and provide photo evidence.
Q: What if the seller asks me to close the dispute?
A: Never close a dispute until:
- You receive the correct item
- You receive the refund in your account
- You’re completely satisfied
Common scam: Seller promises to “send replacement if you close dispute.” You close it, they disappear.
Q: Can I dispute after the buyer protection period ends?
A: No. Once buyer protection expires (usually 60-90 days after order), you can’t open disputes.
Solution: If you suspect issues, open a dispute BEFORE protection expires. You can always close it later if resolved.
Q: Will opening a dispute hurt the seller?
A: Yes, it affects their rating. But that’s not your problem if they sent the wrong item or refused to help.
Don’t feel guilty. You paid for a product/service. If you didn’t get what you paid for, you deserve a refund.
Q: What if I selected the wrong reason for my dispute?
A: You can modify your dispute within the first 24-48 hours by:
- Going to dispute details
- Clicking “Modify Dispute”
- Changing reason and evidence
After a few days, you might need to contact support to modify it.
Q: How do I escalate a dispute to AliExpress?
A: If the seller’s proposed solution isn’t acceptable:
- Go to dispute details
- Click “Reject and request AliExpress to step in”
- Add explanation of why you’re rejecting
- AliExpress mediator will review
Timeline: 7-15 days for AliExpress decision
Q: Can I get a partial refund instead of full refund?
A: Yes! If the item has minor defects but is still usable, you can:
- Request partial refund (keep the item)
- Negotiate amount with seller
- Common partial refunds: 10-50% depending on issue
Example: Item works but has cosmetic damage? Ask for 20% refund and keep it.
Final Thoughts: Is AliExpress Worth the Hassle?
Here’s my honest take after years of dealing with AliExpress:
AliExpress is great for:
- Non-essential items where quality isn’t critical
- When you’re willing to wait 2-4 weeks for shipping
- Experimenting with products before committing to quality versions
- Finding unique items not available locally
AliExpress is NOT great for:
- Time-sensitive purchases
- Items where quality and reliability matter
- Gifts (shipping delays are common)
- When you can’t afford to lose the money (if refund fails)
My recommendation:
- Use AliExpress for cheap experiments and non-critical items
- Use Amazon/local retailers for important purchases
- Always pay with PayPal or credit card (never debit or bank transfer)
- Document everything in case you need to dispute
Refund Timeline Quick Reference
| Stage | Timeframe |
|---|---|
| Open Dispute | Day 1 |
| Seller Response | 5-7 days |
| AliExpress Decision | 7-15 days |
| Refund Processing | 3-20 business days |
| Total Maximum Time | Up to 45 days |
If you’re past 45 days with no refund: Escalate immediately or file chargeback.
Take Action Now
If AliExpress isn’t refunding your money:
Today:

Hello, can you help me with this troublesome post that started last month (LR262425266NL) that came from Hong Kong(commercial purchase of a mini computer). First issue was the custom fees that I had to pay extra of about 50 euros(I thought that this would be taken of by Aliexpress like other companies) to allow the post to enter Portugal. Then I find out that it wasn’t the correct equipment that was advertised but the they allowed for a return although they didn’t give me a return label (like other companies), so they gave me instructions to write down such a long address on my own and go through the whole process of trying to post the order and then to find out that I had to fill in Ctt info on the website to initiate the posting process. Eventually I went to another post office and they starting asking me why the tracking code looked different, but soon realised that I chose the registered post with a value declaration because of the mini computer costing 147 euros incase it went lost by getting post insurance. So they got it done and I had to pay another 39 euros to so last Friday 3 October, just to get it back today with a reason that the product wasn’t allowed on the plane, which is weird because it travelled weeks ago by plane… so why does this occur? The tracking code for the post is VB000202303PT… another thing I noticed on the paperwork that is on the box completed by the post office staff on Friday, is that the post was classified as a sale instead of a return… I think this may have affected the situation also? Because I really need this to go back to Hong Kong to get this commercial order refunded, and I don’t think its fair to pay another postal fee to do so, can you please support me?
Hi Jose,
Thank you for sharing your detailed experience — that sounds incredibly frustrating, and I completely understand how stressful this must be after spending so much time and money trying to resolve it.
While I don’t have direct access to AliExpress customer support or shipping systems, here’s what you can do next:
Contact AliExpress Support (again, but escalate):
Go to your order page, click “Dispute” or “Appeal”, and explain that your item was returned by your local post office due to airline restrictions and that you’ve already paid for return shipping.
Attach photos/scans of your receipts, the tracking number (VB000202303PT), and proof of attempted return.
Ask them to reopen or extend your dispute since the return failed for reasons outside your control.
Explain the customs and mislabeling issue:
Point out that the item was misclassified as a sale by the post office, which may have caused customs or airline rejection. AliExpress usually re-evaluates such cases once you provide documentation.
Contact your local post office (CTT Portugal):
Ask for written clarification about why the item wasn’t allowed on the plane. You can show that letter to AliExpress as proof that the issue wasn’t your fault.
If the seller refuses cooperation:
Contact AliExpress Customer Support Live Chat directly (not through the seller’s messages). Mention that this is a commercial purchase dispute and you’ve followed all steps correctly. Request that the refund be handled by AliExpress directly, not the seller.
You’ve clearly done everything by the book — paying customs, following return instructions, and even insuring the parcel. Hopefully, this documentation will help you get your refund without more extra fees.
Please keep us updated on what AliExpress support says next — it will help others who might face similar issues.
Wishing you the best outcome,
